Why Jesus Entrusts You to His Mother

Embracing Mary's Maternal Care in Our Spiritual Journey

Exclusive

Our Lord entrusts each of us into the care of the most blessed of all women—Mary, His mother.

In a bustling kindergarten classroom, a lively five-year-old named Sammy stood out with his radiant smile and dark, expressive eyes. Each morning, he had a unique way of greeting me: silently approaching, he would gently tug on the rosary beads hanging from my habit. This silent gesture became our special ritual.

One day, after feeling the familiar pull, I turned to find Sammy clutching the beads, his eyes gleaming with joy. He proclaimed, "Sister, if I just hold on to Mary, I will never be lost." His innocent wisdom struck a chord deep within me. Kneeling to meet his gaze, I affirmed, "Sammy, you are right. If you hold on to Mary, you will never be lost." With that, he released the beads and joined his classmates, his smile reflecting the treasure he held in his heart.

Sammy's profound statement wasn't something I had taught him, nor had his non-Christian parents. It was a truth he had come to know through experience—feeling the loving presence of Mary as his heavenly mother.

Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, known as "the Little Flower," once wrote, "How delicate a mother’s heart really is, and how it shows its tenderness in a thousand little cares that no one else thinks about." Reflecting on this, we recognize the countless unseen sacrifices mothers make: tying shoes, wiping tears, and offering comforting embraces. Their love is a silent, yet powerful force that shapes our lives.

Regardless of our personal experiences with our earthly mothers, we all share a universal bond—being carried within them for the first nine months of life. This mysterious connection is a testament to the profound gift of motherhood.

Beyond our earthly experiences, we are blessed with an even greater mother in heaven. From the moment of our conception, Mary has watched over us with a pure and holy love. Her maternal care is unwavering, always guiding us toward her Son, Jesus. Mary's heart desires what Jesus desires for us: to fulfill the Father's will.

In the Gospel, when Jesus says to Mary, "Woman, there is your son," and to His disciple, "There is your mother," He entrusts each of us into the care of Mary, the most blessed among women.

By holding on to Mary, we are assured that we will never be lost. For in her embrace, we are led directly to Jesus.

The Marian Dogmas of the Catholic Church

Divine Maternity of Mary (Council of Ephesus, 431 A.D.): Mary is recognized as the "Theotokos," meaning "God-bearer."

Perpetual Virginity (Lateran Council, 649 A.D.): Mary remained a virgin before, during, and after the birth of Christ.

Immaculate Conception (Pope Pius IX, 1854 A.D.): Mary was preserved from all stain of original sin from the first moment of her conception.

Bodily Assumption into Heavenly Glory (Pope Pius XII, 1950 A.D.): At the end of her earthly life, Mary was assumed body and soul into heaven.

Embracing these truths deepens our understanding of Mary's role in our spiritual journey and reinforces the trust Jesus places in her care for us.
