Sacred Heart Devotion in the United States

Insights into st margaret mary alacoque and sacred heart relics

The United States is experiencing a profound spiritual renewal as the major relics of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, the visionary behind the Sacred Heart devotion, journey across the nation.

In early June, during their spring assembly in Orlando, Florida, the U.S. bishops consecrated the country to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, marking the nation's 250th anniversary.

Present at this significant event were the relics of St. Margaret Mary, including her clavicles, two ribs, and a small piece of her brain, encased in a 150-pound gold-and-glass reliquary.

Following the consecration, the relics were displayed at the Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center in New Haven, Connecticut, from June 17 to 27, drawing numerous faithful seeking to venerate the saint.

Peter Sonski, the center's director of education and outreach, emphasized the appropriateness of the relics' presence, noting St. Margaret Mary's pivotal role in promoting the Sacred Heart devotion.

He highlighted the significance of the bishops' decision to consecrate the nation during this milestone anniversary.

The reliquary's design is notably unique, featuring a white veil covering the bones, with a golden rose resting atop, allowing for both reverence and visibility.

St. Margaret Mary, a 17th-century Visitation sister, received visions of Jesus between 1673 and 1675, leading to the widespread adoption of the Sacred Heart devotion.

After its stay in New Haven, the relics traveled to Washington, D.C., where they were available for veneration at the Saint John Paul II National Shrine from June 29 through July 1.

Subsequently, they moved to Baltimore's Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, known as the Baltimore Basilica, for veneration on July 5 and 6.

Archbishop William E. Lori celebrated Mass on July 5, initiating the public veneration and commemorating the nation's 250th anniversary.

These events have drawn individuals from various regions, underscoring the deep connection many feel to the Sacred Heart devotion.

Attendees have expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to be in the presence of the relics, seeking intercession for personal intentions and reflecting on the saint's influence in their spiritual journeys.

For those interested in future veneration opportunities, the Blessed Michael McGivney Pilgrimage Center has scheduled additional dates, including July 8-11 and July 15-18, with potential extensions into early fall.

As the relics continue their journey, they serve as a tangible reminder of the enduring legacy of St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and the profound impact of the Sacred Heart devotion on the faithful across the United States.
