Pope Leo’s Powerful Invitation to Altar Boys: Is Jesus Calling You?

On August 25, 2025, during the feast of St. Louis IX, Pope Leo XIV addressed over 350 French altar servers gathered in Rome, emphasizing the critical need for priestly vocations and the profound significance of the Eucharist.

 

In his heartfelt message, the Pope highlighted the pressing issue of the priest shortage in France, describing it as "a great misfortune" for both the Church and the nation. He urged the young attendees to remain open to the possibility that Jesus might be calling them to follow Him more closely in the priesthood. This call to service, he noted, is both a challenge and a profound opportunity to serve the faithful.

 

Reflecting on the Jubilee Year, Pope Leo XIV reminded the altar servers that passing through the Holy Door is an exceptional occasion to "convert," grow in faith, and become better disciples. He encouraged them to spend time speaking to Jesus in the depths of their hearts, emphasizing that Jesus desires to become their best and most faithful friend.

 

Addressing the challenges faced by the world, the Pope posed the question: "Who will come to our aid?" He provided a clear answer, stating that "only Jesus comes to save us, and no one else," because He alone has the power and love to do so. The Pope underscored that Jesus' sacrifice on the cross is the most wonderful aspect of the Catholic faith, demonstrating God's immense love for humanity.

 

Focusing on the Eucharist, Pope Leo XIV described it as "the treasure of the Church, the treasure of treasures." He emphasized that the Mass is the most important event in the life of a Christian and the Church, as it is the encounter where God gives Himself to us out of love, again and again. He reminded the altar servers that Christians attend Mass not out of obligation but out of a profound need for the life of God that is given without return.

 

The Pope expressed deep gratitude for the generous service that altar servers provide in their parishes. He invited them to "persevere faithfully," keeping in mind the greatness and holiness of what is being celebrated. He highlighted that the Mass is both a moment of celebration and joy, as well as a serious, solemn moment imbued with gravity. He encouraged the altar servers to ensure that their attitude, silence, dignity of service, liturgical beauty, order, and majesty of gestures draw the faithful into the sacred grandeur of the mystery.

 

In a direct appeal to the young attendees, Pope Leo XIV invited them to consider the possibility of a vocation to the priesthood. He spoke to their enthusiastic and generous consciences, urging them to listen to the call of Jesus, even if it might cause some concern. He emphasized that the shortage of priests is a significant misfortune and encouraged them to discover the beauty, happiness, and necessity of such a vocation. He described the life of a priest as wonderful, encountering Jesus in an exceptional way each day and giving Him to the world.
