Embracing the Brown Scapular Devotion: A Timeless Tradition in the Bronx

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Continues to Foster Deep Marian Devotion

Exclusive

The Brown Scapular devotion holds a cherished place in the hearts of many faithful, symbolizing a profound commitment to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the teachings of the Carmelite Order.

Rooted in the 13th century, this devotion began when the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock, an English Carmelite friar, presenting him with the scapular and promising salvation to those who wear it faithfully.

In the Bronx, the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church stands as a beacon of this enduring tradition.

Located at 627 East 187th Street, this historic parish has been a spiritual home for generations, fostering a deep connection to Marian devotion through the Brown Scapular.

The church's commitment to this tradition is evident in its vibrant community activities and religious services.

For instance, in April 2024, the church hosted a collaboration between the Bronx Arts Ensemble Orchestra and Courtney’s Stars of Tomorrow, performing Mozart’s Coronation Mass, reflecting the parish's dedication to enriching the spiritual and cultural life of its members.

Additionally, in June 2025, the church welcomed the St. Anthony of Padua Holy Relic Tour, offering parishioners a unique opportunity to venerate the relics and deepen their faith.

The Brown Scapular itself is more than a physical object; it represents a spiritual commitment.

Comprising two small pieces of brown wool connected by strings and worn over the shoulders, it serves as a constant reminder of one's dedication to faith and the protective presence of the Virgin Mary.

Enrollment in the Brown Scapular involves a simple ceremony conducted by a priest, formally investing the individual in the scapular and affiliating them with the Carmelite Order.

Once enrolled, the wearer becomes part of the larger Scapular Confraternity, sharing in the spiritual benefits and communal support it offers.

The Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, associated with the parish, has also been a pillar of the community.

Celebrating its centennial in September 2024, the school invited Cardinal Dolan to commemorate this milestone, highlighting a century of educational and spiritual contributions to the Bronx community.

However, in May 2025, it was announced that the Mount Carmel-Holy Rosary School would close at the end of the 2024–2025 academic year due to challenges in enrollment and financial sustainability.

This decision underscores the evolving landscape of Catholic education in the area.

Despite these changes, the devotion to the Brown Scapular and the spiritual life of the parish remain steadfast.

The annual feast day of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, celebrated on July 16th, continues to be a significant event.

In July 2024, the church hosted a block party on Belmont Avenue at East 187th Street, featuring food, entertainment, and games, bringing together the community in joyous celebration.

For those interested in embracing the Brown Scapular devotion, the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church offers guidance and support.

Whether through participation in the enrollment ceremony, attending Masses, or engaging in community events, individuals can deepen their faith and connection to this timeless tradition.

In a world of constant change, the Brown Scapular devotion serves as a steadfast symbol of faith, protection, and commitment to the Christian way of life.

Through the efforts of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church and its community, this sacred tradition continues to inspire and guide the faithful in the Bronx and beyond.
