Catholic Communities Rally to Support Victims of Texas Hill Country Flooding

Faith in Action: Churches and Volunteers Provide Aid and Comfort Amidst Devastation

Exclusive

In the wake of the catastrophic flooding that struck Texas Hill Country on July 4, 2025, Catholic communities have swiftly mobilized to offer both spiritual and material support to those affected. The unprecedented deluge resulted in at least 79 fatalities, including 28 children, and left numerous individuals unaccounted for. The Guadalupe River's rapid rise devastated areas such as Kerr County, home to Camp Mystic, an all-girls summer camp severely impacted by the floodwaters.

Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller of San Antonio promptly traveled to Kerrville to provide solace to grieving families and to oversee relief efforts. He visited Notre Dame Catholic Church, which has transformed its gymnasium into an emergency shelter for evacuees. The church, in collaboration with Catholic Charities, has been distributing essential supplies, including food, clothing, hygiene products, and water, to those in need.

In a heartfelt statement, the Archdiocese of San Antonio expressed its commitment to standing with survivors during these challenging times, urging the faithful to answer Christ's call to love one another. Special Masses have been scheduled to pray for the victims and their families, with Archbishop García-Siller presiding over services in Kerrville and San Antonio dedicated to those lost and missing.

The Diocese of Beaumont has also announced a Mass to honor those affected by the flooding, specifically naming local parishioners who perished in the disaster. Similarly, the Diocese of Austin has called upon its members to join in prayer with their Hill Country neighbors, invoking Our Lady of Prompt Succor to bring calm to the rushing rivers and to protect both the missing and the rescuers.

Pope Leo XIV has extended his sincere condolences to the families who have lost loved ones, particularly the young girls at the summer camp affected by the flooding. He offered prayers for the victims and their families during the Angelus in St. Peter's Square, emphasizing the global solidarity with those suffering in Texas.

Local officials, including Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, have pledged unwavering support for the affected communities, promising to do everything humanly possible to find the missing individuals. The White House has also committed to providing any necessary assistance to Texas during this crisis.

As the floodwaters recede, the Catholic community's response stands as a testament to the power of faith in action. Through prayers, shelter, and essential aid, they embody the teachings of Christ by serving their neighbors in times of profound need.
